What is epilepsy?
Suddenly, your son starts shaking violently. He is on the ground making uncontrolled movements. Naturally, you are very alarmed. These are characteristics of epilepsy. During an epileptic seizure, there are uncontrolled movements of the arms, legs, and head. A person experiencing a seizure may lose consciousness. But what is epilepsy? Epilepsy is a disorder in the brain where large groups of brain cells temporarily, suddenly, and uncontrollably discharge. This can be likened to a kind of short circuit. An epileptic seizure is generally the result.
Epilepsy in children
In total, there are about 20,000 children in the Netherlands diagnosed with epilepsy. This is determined through various hospital tests, including an EEG and MRI scan. The treatment of epilepsy in children usually involves the use of medication that can reduce or even prevent seizures. There are different forms of epilepsy in children. Some forms only occur at a young age and may disappear later on. On thewebsite of the Epilepsy Foundationyou can find more information about epilepsy in children.
What should you do in case of epilepsy?
Your child is having an epileptic seizure. Or you are walking in the supermarket and suddenly see a boy making jerking and uncontrolled movements. Is it a victim you know has epilepsy? Then briefly wait for the seizure to pass. An epileptic seizure usually lasts a few minutes and first aid is not necessary. Does the victim remain in the seizure or lose consciousness? Call 112 immediately and put your phone on speaker. Ensure that the victim cannot injure themselves and has nothing in their mouth. If the victim regains consciousness before the ambulance arrives, you may call 112 again to report this.
