5 Tips: How to Use the Car Seat Correctly

Tip 1: Check the approval label of the car seat
We start with the basics: the car seat must be approved. In the Netherlands, this means that the car seat must be approved according to Regulation 44 or 129. On every car seat, there is a label where you can find the following information: the approval number, the weight class (R44) or height class (R129/i-Size), and the type of approval.

Tip 2: Ensure a suitable car seat
Whether the car seat is suitable for your child depends on your child's weight or height. Based on the weight and height, you choose a baby seat, toddler car seat, or booster seat. You can also find the suitable weight class or height on the approval label. The weight class indicates from and up to which weight your child the seat is approved according to R44. If the seat is approved according to R129, the minimum and maximum height are listed.

Tip 3: Be cautious with second-hand car seats
Buying a car seat second-hand can save you a lot of money. In many cases, this is not a problem. However, check whether the seat is approved according to R44 or R129 (check the label) and ensure nothing has happened to the seat. Has the seat been in a car during a collision or accident? Then do not use the seat, as it is likely no longer functioning properly.

Tip 4: Turn off the airbag with a rear-facing seat
You may transport children both in the front and back of the car. Are you using a car seat on the passenger seat? Always check if the airbag is deactivated. Due to the force with which an airbag opens during an accident, your child can be seriously injured. Move the seat as far back as possible.

Tip 5: Secure your child properly: check the straps and belts
Always secure your child properly, even for short distances. Check the straps and belts carefully: they should not be twisted. Also, ensure that the straps are not too loose: there should be a maximum of 1 centimeter between the straps and your child. Therefore, do not put your child in the seat with a thick coat. In cold weather, you can use an extra blanket over the seat. If your child can fasten the belt themselves, always double-check it.
