Protect Your Skin Against the Treacherous Spring Sun

What wonderful weather! High temperatures are forecast again for the coming weekend. Enjoy, of course, but do take care. The spring sun is more treacherous than you think. Due to the sun's strength, your skin—which probably hasn't seen much sun this year—can burn within 20 minutes. Your child's skin is also extra susceptible to the sun's UV radiation. So be cautious!

With this lovely weather, we naturally want nothing more than to go out: to the beach, play in the park, or grab an ice cream in the city. However, prepare for the sun's strength, because before you know it, you can get sunburned. This is not only unpleasant—a sunburned skin can be quite painful—but it's also dangerous. According to the KWF, sunburn increases the risk of skin cancer, especially at a young age.

How do you protect your child from the sun?

    • Apply sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30 to your child, even under clothing. Don't forget the face, feet, and ears.
    • Do this every 2 hours.
    • Use a hat and sunglasses to protect the head and eyes from the sun.
    • Avoid the sun between 12:00 PM and 3:00 PM, as it is strongest then.
    • Keep children younger than 1 year out of direct sunlight.
    • Wear clothing to protect the skin.

What if your child gets sunburned?
Have you protected the skin from the sun, but your child is still sunburned? Immediately provide cooling with a lukewarm shower or wet towels and ensure they drink enough to prevent dehydration. Then, you can apply aftersun or another body lotion with a cooling effect to your child. Do this as often as needed.
