Beware of the dangerous giant hogweed

It may seem like a beautiful and harmless plant, but it is not: the giant hogweed. If you come into contact with the sap of this plant, it can lead to severe skin damage. So be careful! What should you do if things go wrong? You can read it here.

You have probably seen the giant hogweed along the roadside. From early June, you mainly see this plant along highways, railways, and forest walking paths. It stands out because the giant hogweed can grow up to 3.5 meters high. It is a well-known plant, recognizable by the large white flower clusters that can reach over a meter in diameter.

Avoid contact with the giant hogweed
But be careful. Although this plant seems perfectly suitable for children to hide under or play around, you must avoid touching the giant hogweed. If you come into contact with the leaves, stems, or sap of the plant, it can lead to large blisters, burns, and even infections.

What are the consequences?
Children who have come into contact with the sap of the plant and then walked in the sun often come home first with itchy red blisters. After a few hours, these blisters can grow into large blisters resembling severe burns. This not only feels very unpleasant, but the burn blisters also heal only after 1 to 2 weeks. Moreover, a scar may form.

What should I do if things go wrong?
Have you – or your child – come into contact with the giant hogweed? Then take the following steps:

  • In the mouth: go directly to the emergency room.
  • In the eyes: rinse the eyes and call the doctor immediately.
  • On the skin: rinse the skin with water and soap. If you have no water or soap available, cover the skin to prevent it from coming into contact with sunlight.
