More and more young parents know what to do in case of choking

In 2013, 62% of parents had no idea what to do if their child choked on a grape (source), but fortunately, the number of participants in first aid courses has been rising significantly each year. Last year, there were 65,000 participants, compared to 9,000 in 2013. That's almost seven times as many.

According to the Red Cross, this is mainly due to the short courses, sometimes lasting just one evening, that EHBO Bureau also offers.

“This is related to a 'growing awareness' among young parents,” says an employee of the IJsselland safety region in anarticleto the AD. “Children are their most precious possession, and parents want to know what to do in case of an emergency.”

The same article discusses practicing on a baby doll to learn what to do if a child chokes on something: With two fingers, Jordy Grip presses hard on the sternum of a baby doll. "Ouch, not so hard," his partner Ina van Tongeren exclaims in shock. "Don't worry, he's doing it exactly right," says the first aid instructor. "If you want the child to expel the grape they choked on, you have to press hard."
